Give A Little, Gain A Lot
In September 2015, after 3 years of meetings with the most influential leaders and business people on this planet, the United Nations introduced 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Their intent was to inspire and propel countless global efforts to improve life for all 7 Billion plus inhabitants of this planet by the year 2030.
Studies all over the world show that child sponsorship is one of the most effective ways of ending poverty.
With this in mind, Alison attended a conference in Singapore in 2018 to try and find out how she could help contribute towards this global effort. She went with the best intentions but knew that all the biggest intentions mean nothing without any action.
Alison met with many desperate charities from all around the world but it was Binita that seemed to her the most desperate for child sponsorship.
Binita had a chance to stand up for only 60 seconds at the conference and tell the room about the children in her care who were the victims of serious sexual abuse, some as young as 2 years old. Over the coffee break Alison spoke more about the children and her obvious desperate situation. For the last 15 years, Binita has cared for 207 serious cases of sexual abuse in children and many more private counselling cases. She had been funded by the Dutch government but after the earthquakes hit, the Dutch pulled out of Nepal and the charity had run out of money. In fact the staff had been working for months without pay.
Binita is a child psychologist that has dedicated her life to helping vulnerable children. Binita and her staff loved those children like their own and needed urgent support. Alison knew what her action must be at that moment; to ensure that the staff got paid and the safe house continued.
Within the next 6 months, Alison visited Nepal before returning home to secure further funding in the UK to keep the safe house in Hetauda, Nepal open. She set up the Guiding Light Foundation and with the help of some local donations and the commitment of YesTax, she was able to secure the funding. The Guiding Light foundation is unique in the fact that there are no administration costs. All funds that we donate to the Guiding Light foundation go directly to the children.
John Moxon had also visited Nepal on two occasions, having been part of mountaineering expeditions to climb two of the country’s highest peaks.
Both John and Alison came away from Nepal with two similar conclusions. The first was that the country is desperately poor, with a lack of basic infrastructure that westerners take for granted.
All of us at YesTax are parents and we were immediately taken in by the work that Binita and her team were doing in Nepal and agreed to support the cause without delay. Every time you do business with YesTax, we give 2.5% of our turnover to the Guiding Light Foundation which helps fund Binita’s extra-ordinary journey.
Every child has the right to be safe and secure and free from sexual abuse. Together we are making a huge difference and so thank you all YesTax loyal supporters. For more information, please visit www.yes.tax
