Nepali Children September Update

Little by little the efforts of individual businesses can create the momentum we need to improve our world. As part of our own small efforts to make a difference to the world around us, YesTax donates 2.5% of all our fees to children who live in poverty.

As many of you already know, Nepal has sparked a flame within our company that will not be extinguished very easily. The highlights from the last quarter of activities from the safe house we support include;

  • 20 cases have been referred to the safe house and due to the lockdown, more virtual counselling sessions to children and parents have been given.
  • 2 children were successfully re-integrated (one of the children has had 4 years of counselling with us) and we have had one new little girl joining us. Sadly she had been abused by her father during lockdown but she is settling in nicely and has already had a number of positive counselling sessions.
  • 221 counselling sessions have been delivered in total by our resident child psychologist as well as the virtual meetings held with families outside of the safe house. For instance, we held a virtual training session conducted on "End Discrimination on Mental Health and Sexual Abuse" for Doctors and Nurses in the Patan Academy of Health Science.
  • 5 re-integrated children have been followed up and more general medical check-ups have been provided to 2 of our children, Aashma and Samjhana.

One of our missions in the safe house is to secure a bright future for the children. The safe house has already opened a café in Kathmandu which provides an employment platform for some of the girls following their graduation at school. The safe house is always trying to encourage the girls to be entrepreneurs so that like us, they can be in charge of their own destiny and role models for the younger children in the safehouse and beyond. This month, we started a new business for Manjita selling spicy snacks. Majita is at the safe-house with her 20-month-old daughter and she is absolutely delighted as she has started to make her own money which will help to secure her future for herself and her baby when the time comes to leave the security of the safe house.

This quarter, we have created an activities calendar that helps the children engage in different activities and look forward to the weeks ahead. The calendar is based on children's ages and interests includes dance, drama, arts and crafts, story-telling and yoga. The children are also making socks, sweaters, scarfs and hats ready for the colder season ahead.

Thank you and best wishes from Binita and the rest of the team in Nepal xxx
